  6. Major changes in Version 8.0
  7.  
  8. WinZip 8.0 includes significant enhancements for all WinZip
  9. users, whether novice or advanced.  The new Zip and E-Mail
  10. feature zips documents and folders and attaches the Zip file to
  11. an e-mail message without leaving Explorer.  The greatly enhanced
  12. Wizard can now create and update Zip files, as well as extract
  13. and install from MIME and similar encoded files (great for e-mail
  14. attachments). Improvements to the WinZip Classic interface make
  15. it more Windows-like than ever; for example, an optional
  16. Explorer-style toolbar is available, and, when creating or updating
  17. an archive, WinZip automatically stores the same subfolders and
  18. folder information that Windows Explorer would use for a similar
  19. copy operation.  And installing those very popular desktop themes
  20. and screen savers from Internet downloads has always been a
  21. difficult and cumbersome process, but WinZip's new automatic
  22. theme and screen saver installer makes it easy.

  27. Enhanced WinZip Wizard
  28.  
  29. - WinZip Wizard functionality has been extended to allow you to
  30.   create and update Zip files from the Wizard.  After the initial
  31.   Welcome panel, the Wizard displays a new Select Activity panel;
  32.   from here, you specify whether you want to unzip/install,
  33.   update an existing archive, or create a new archive.  Like the
  34.   existing Unzip/Install Wizard, the new Add Wizard is designed
  35.   to make the most common operations easy and convenient.

  37. - The Wizard can now extract and install from MIME and other
  38.   encoded files.  This makes processing of e-mail attachments
  39.   from online service such as AOL and CompuServe easier for
  40.   Wizard users.
  41.  
  42. - The Wizard now supports automatic installation of desktop
  43.   themes and screen savers (see below for more information).

  46. More Windows-like interface
  47.  
  48. - When you click the right mouse button on a file in the
  49.   archive contents list, the context menu now displays any
  50.   associated actions for the type of file selected.  For example,
  51.   right-clicking on a .DOC file (Microsoft Word document) might
  52.   display "Open", "Print", and "New".  As in Explorer, hold down
  53.   the Shift key while clicking the right mouse button to add an
  54.   "Open With ..." choice to the menu.  This menu item allows you
  55.   to choose the application you wish to use to open the selected
  56.   file.

  58. - Inclusion of subfolders when adding, updating, etc., is now
  59.   automatic and mirrors Explorer's treatment of subfolders.  You
  60.   no longer have to check the "Include subfolders" checkbox;
  61.   instead, WinZip determines when to include subfolders using the
  62.   same logic that Explorer does.  Specifically:
  63.  
  64.    1) When individual files are added, WinZip does not look in
  65.       subfolders for files with the same name.
  66.  
  67.    2) When a folder is added, WinZip always adds the contents of
  68.       all its subfolders, just as Explorer always copies all
  69.       subfolders when you copy a folder.
  70.  
  71.   The "Include subfolders" option in the Add dialog box is still
  72.   available if wildcards (* or ?) are used in the filename field.
  73.   This allows you to, for example, zip all *.DOC files in a
  74.   folder tree with a single operation.

  76.   WinZip automatically stores the same path information that is
  77.   copied when using drag and drop or copy and paste in the
  78.   Windows Explorer.

  80. - Optional new "Explorer-style" toolbar buttons are available.
  81.   These Internet Explorer-like buttons are simpler in style than
  82.   the traditional WinZip toolbar buttons and optionally appear
  83.   in gray, changing to full color when the mouse pointer is on
  84.   them.

  86. - WinZip now displays a tooltip when a Zip file is selected in
  87.   Windows Explorer.  The tooltip shows how many files are in the
  88.   archive and displays the archive comment, if there is one.  If
  89.   "View as Web Page" is enabled in Explorer, the information will
  90.   instead appear in the description area of the web page.  The
  91.   Windows Desktop Update (Active Desktop) must be installed and
  92.   WinZip shell extensions enabled in order to use this feature.

  94. - When you click the right mouse button on a file in the archive
  95.   contents list, the pop-up menu now displays only file-related
  96.   actions such as Extract.  This is more consistent with general
  97.   Windows conventions.  Use the Actions or File menu for
  98.   archive-related actions like Virus Scan.

  100. - Under Windows 98 and Windows 2000, WinZip menus now display small
  101.   icons corresponding to the menu items' toolbar buttons.

  104. Desktop theme and screen saver support
  105.  
  106. - WinZip can install desktop themes and screen savers contained
  107.   in Zip files.  To use this feature, simply open a Zip file
  108.   containing a theme or screen saver and click the Install
  109.   button.  WinZip will extract all necessary files to the
  110.   appropriate folder(s) and then run the required system theme or
  111.   screen saver support application to complete installation.
  112.   Theme/screen saver installation is also supported by the WinZip
  113.   Wizard.  See online help ("Install Feature" topic) for complete
  114.   information.

  117. Other changes
  118.  
  119. - Zip and E-Mail adds a new feature to the Windows Explorer
  120.   context menu. To use the feature, simply select files or
  121.   folders in Explorer and choose Zip and E-Mail from the pop-up
  122.   menu. WinZip creates a Zip file containing the selected items
  123.   and attaches it to a new e-mail message. The Zip file is
  124.   automatically deleted when your e-mail program no longer needs
  125.   it.  This feature requires that a supported e-mail application
  126.   such as Outlook be installed.

  128. - WinZip can automatically display the Zip comment when opening
  129.   a Zip file that contains a comment.
  130.  
  131. - When the open Zip contains a comment, WinZip displays a
  132.   new icon on the Classic interface status line.  You can
  133.   click the icon to view and edit the comment.
  134.  
  135. - Most of WinZip's major dialogs now have "What's This?" help.
  136.   Click on the question mark in the dialog's title bar, then
  137.   click on a control for quick information about how it's used.
  138.  
  139. - WinZip now displays an animated progress dialog during lengthy
  140.   archive operations and can be minimized during such operations.

  142. - The Miscellaneous tab of the Configuration dialog has several
  143.   new options, allowing you to:
  144.  
  145.     - set the number of recently used files listed in the
  146.       File menu,
  147.     - enable or disable the theme/screen saver installer,
  148.     - automatically show comments when opening Zip files,
  149.     - enable or disable the animated status dialog used
  150.       during long Zip operations, and
  151.     - restore all warning messages that you have previously
  152.       turned off.

  154. - A new option in the System tab of the Configuration dialog
  155.   allows you to control whether dialogs are shown when you drag
  156.   and drop files from Explorer onto an archive or a WinZip
  157.   window.

  159. - The list of recently used files in the Classic mode File menu
  160.   has been enhanced:
  161.  
  162.     - The case and capitalization of files in the list adhere to
  163.       the preferences you have selected for files in the main
  164.       WinZip window.
  165.  
  166.     - WinZip no longer places in the list files that were
  167.       automatically opened from the Windows temporary folder.
  168.       This means that, for example, temporary Zip files created
  169.       by opening e-mail attachments won't clutter the file list.

  171. - A new button for Close Archive is available and can be added to
  172.   the toolbar from the toolbar configuration dialog.
  173.  
  174. - If you click the View button and multiple files are selected,
  175.   WinZip will perform the specified action on all selected files;
  176.   previously, WinZip only performed the action on the first
  177.   selected file.  For example, if you click View when two .DOC
  178.   files are selected, both documents will be opened.
  179.  
  180. - The WinZip Self-Extractor Personal Edition is now a 32-bit
  181.   program exclusively and no longer supports creation of 16-bit
  182.   extractors.
  183.  
  184. - Winzip's Windows extensions are now 32-bit Explorer Shell
  185.   extensions only.  The File Manager extension is no longer
  186.   supported.

  188. - The System tab of the Configuration dialog has an option to
  189.   change WinZip's associated file types.
